The School Safety and Support Grant is a competitive Utah funding program for local education agencies that need to improve school safety and security.

The program can help LEAs address physical safety needs identified through a School Safety Needs Assessment. Eligible projects may include security upgrades, emergency communication improvements, safety training, first-aid resources, and other school safety measures that support safer learning environments.

For the FY25 grant cycle, LEAs were required to complete a school safety needs assessment and submit the required School Safety Needs Assessment Summary Form before applying. The FY25 application period closed on January 31, 2025, so schools should check the Utah State Board of Education for any future funding rounds before treating this as an active grant opportunity.

The law also requires school building personnel to receive training before the school year begins on the correct protocol and use of the panic alert device.

In addition to wearable panic alert devices, H.B. 84 includes broader school safety requirements related to:

The purpose of the law is to improve emergency communication, support faster response, strengthen coordination with public safety partners, and help schools better protect students, staff, and visitors during emergencies.
