Maryland State Funding

State Funding

Maryland provides school-safety funding through several state-administered grant programs. These programs support digital school mapping, security improvements, emergency preparedness, hate-crime prevention, and other safety-related projects for eligible schools and organizations.

School Facility Mapping Grant

SFMG

The School Facility Mapping Grant, also known as the School Mapping Data Grant Program, was created to help local school systems develop digital facility maps for public Prekindergarten through Grade 12 schools, including public charter schools.

The purpose of these maps is to support first responders and other authorized stakeholders during school emergencies. Mapping data funded through the program must follow standards developed by the Interagency Commission on School Construction.

For FY2026, Maryland appropriated $3 million for this initiative. The FY2026 application period has closed, but the grant performance period runs from July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2027.

Eligible mapping data should be compatible with public safety systems and available in standard digital and printable formats. The maps must be oriented to true north, overlaid on current aerial imagery, and include gridded X and Y coordinates. They must also be verified through building and grounds walkthroughs and clearly label important site details such as room names, hallways, exterior doors, stairwells, hazards, utilities, key boxes, AEDs, trauma kits, parking areas, athletic fields, surrounding roads, and nearby properties.

Hate Crimes Grant

HGG

The Hate Crimes Grant is a competitive, state-funded reimbursement grant for eligible local school systems, non-public schools, private schools, and childcare centers that are determined to be at risk of hate crime incidents.

For FY2027, the Maryland Center for School Safety began accepting applications on June 15, 2026, with submissions due by 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time on July 17, 2026.

Safe Schools Fund Grant

SSFG

The Safe Schools Fund Grant is a non-competitive, state-funded grant program for local school systems in Maryland.

The grant supports school safety and security-related matters under Md. Code Ann., Education Article §7-1512. Funds may be used toward eligible school-safety projects and services approved through the state review process.

For FY2027, the Maryland Center for School Safety lists the grant announcement as coming soon, so local school systems should confirm the current NOFA, allocation amounts, application instructions, and eligible uses before planning a project around this funding.

Maryland School Mapping Data Requirements

Maryland’s school mapping legislation created a program to help local school systems produce digital school mapping data for each public school, including public charter schools. The goal is to give first responders accurate and accessible facility information during emergencies.

Mapping data supported by the program must meet state standards for format, accuracy, labeling, interoperability, and ongoing maintenance. Required map features may include building layouts, access points, room labels, hazards, utilities, AEDs, trauma kits, parking areas, athletic fields, surrounding roads, and other key site details.

The maps must be usable by schools and public safety agencies, available in digital and printable formats, verified against current site conditions, and designed to support emergency response planning and coordination.
