Iowa State Funding

State Funding
Iowa previously offered dedicated school-safety funding through the School Safety Improvement Fund, which helped schools complete safety-related capital improvements identified through vulnerability assessments.

The application period for this fund has closed. Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management states that applications are no longer accepted, the application deadline was December 31, 2024, and the deadline for all outstanding work was December 31, 2025.
Although this grant is no longer active, Iowa schools may still benefit from statewide school-safety resources created through the Governor’s School Safety Initiative, including vulnerability assessments, critical incident mapping, school safety training, emergency preparedness support, and the Safe+Sound Iowa anonymous reporting system.
Safe+Sound Iowa
Safe+Sound Iowa is a free anonymous K–12 school safety reporting system available to students, school staff, parents, and community members. It allows users to report concerns related to violence, weapons, self-harm, victimization, or threatening behavior so schools and appropriate response partners can intervene before a situation escalates.
Current Funding Note
As of 2026, the School Safety Improvement Fund should be described as a previously available funding program, not an open grant. Schools should check Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management and the Iowa Department of Education for any new funding rounds or related school-safety programs.
