Alaska State Funding

State Funding

Alaska school districts seeking funding for safety-related facility improvements may use the state’s capital project process as a potential pathway. While this program is not limited to school safety, it can be relevant when proposed projects involve major maintenance, building upgrades, emergency communication systems, fire safety, access control, or other improvements connected to health, safety, and emergency preparedness.

Grant & Debt Reimbursement Project Administration

Alaska’s Department of Education and Early Development administers state aid for school district capital projects through two pathways: school construction and major maintenance grants, and debt reimbursement for eligible bonded projects.

Any Alaska school district may submit an application for a School Construction or Major Maintenance grant by the annual September 1 deadline. Each application must describe the proposed scope of work, budget, and justification for need. Approved projects enter a statewide prioritization process, and the resulting list is considered by the legislature during the state budget appropriation process.

If funding is approved, the department issues a project agreement that outlines the scope, budget, conditions, required submittals, payment process, and responsibilities of the district or municipality. Grant payments are released as required project documents are submitted and approved, while final closeout occurs after the department reviews all required materials and executes a termination agreement.

For school safety purposes, this program may be relevant when security, emergency communication, fire-safety, access-control, or building-safety improvements are part of an eligible capital project or major maintenance need.
